97 Books foundAbout the UQOPI Public Domain Literature Library
The UQOPI Public Domain Literature Library offers 97 works that are freely available for reading and study. This catalogue brings together historical texts, archaeological studies, biographies, and narrative histories, all drawn from Project Gutenberg. Each book has been selected for its value to readers interested in ancient cultures, social customs, and the development of human knowledge.
Browsing the Catalogue
The library is organized into four categories, each grouping works that share a thematic or geographic focus. You can browse by category from the navigation, search by keyword or author, or explore the full list of titles. The archive page provides links to individual book records, where you will find bibliographic details and editorial notes.
Book Records and Source Attribution
Every book record includes the title, author(s), digital source (Project Gutenberg), keywords, target reader description, and a catalogue note that offers context and commentary. All works are sourced from Project Gutenberg, which provides public-domain texts digitized by volunteers. No original content has been altered; the library adds only editorial framing to assist readers.
Categories Overview
The four categories are: Exploring Ancient Worlds & Civilizations (Greece), Rome (Rome), Egypt Near East (Egypt and Near East), and Exploring Crusades, Knights & Castles (Ancient Civilizations). Each category represents a distinct lens through which to explore the past, from domestic life to grand historical narratives.
Three Practical Reading Paths
Path 1: Ancient Greek Daily Life. Begin with The Home Life of the Ancient Greeks by Hugo Blümner, then move to Greek Dress by Ethel Abrahams, and conclude with The History of the Manners and Customs of Ancient Greece, Volume 1 by James Augustus St. John. This path offers a layered view of Greek domestic customs and material culture.
Path 2: Roman Social History. Start with Social life at Rome in the Age of Cicero by W. Warde Fowler, continue with Roman life in the days of Cicero by Alfred John Church, and finish with The Private Life of the Romans by Harold Whetstone Johnston. These works together reconstruct the texture of everyday life in the late Republic.
Path 3: Ancient Civilizations and Archaeology. Begin with Beacon Lights of History, Volume 03: Ancient Achievements by John Lord, then read Babylonians and Assyrians by A. H. Sayce, and finally The Excavations at Babylon by Robert Koldewey. This sequence moves from broad survey to detailed site report.
Bibliographic dates and catalogue measurements
The catalogue distinguishes the Project Gutenberg digital release from a work’s original or first publication. Project Gutenberg is identified as the digital source for the edition available here; its release year is therefore shown as Gutenberg Release Year, not as the work’s original publication year.
When an explicit first-publication or issue date can be supported directly by the title or issue information, it may be shown separately as First Publication Year. When that date cannot be confirmed, the catalogue displays Not confirmed rather than guessing a year.
Where the source text can be measured reliably, the catalogue may provide word count and estimated reading time. These measurements describe reading scope and are not quality rankings.
The current catalogue contains 4 active subject categories: Greece, Rome, Egypt Near East, and Ancient Civilizations. Categories are browsing aids and may overlap where a work reasonably fits more than one subject.
