Acceptance of Terms
By accessing or using the Ancient History Library (the 'Site'), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site. We may revise these terms at any time; continued use after changes constitutes acceptance. It is your responsibility to review the terms periodically for updates.
Use of the Site
The Site provides editorial notes, reading guides, and access to digitised texts of historical and literary works. All materials are offered for lawful, personal, non-commercial use only. You may download, read, and share individual works for educational or private purposes, provided you retain all copyright notices and attribute the Source where feasible. The editorial content—such as the thematic analyses in The History of the Manners and Customs of Ancient Greece or the reading notes for The Story of the Alphabet—is intended to enrich your understanding, not to replace independent study. We encourage you to explore the works deeply, but remember that our annotations are supplementary. Where we provide background context, as in Chronicles of the house of Borgia — Edition Insights, it is meant to spark curiosity, not to serve as definitive scholarship.
Prohibited Conduct
You agree not to:
- Use the Site for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable laws.
- Reproduce, distribute, or publicly display substantial portions of the Site's content for commercial gain without prior written permission. This includes republishing our reading guides or thematic analyses in any medium for profit.
- Engage in automated scraping, data mining, or any form of bulk extraction of content, whether for archiving, indexing, or any other purpose, without express written consent. We respect the integrity of our catalogue and the effort behind each entry.
- Interfere with the Site's operation, including introducing malicious code, overloading servers, or attempting to bypass security measures.
- Impersonate any person or entity or misrepresent your affiliation with us.
Intellectual Property and Copyright
The editorial content, including introductions, reading notes, and thematic analyses, is original work and protected by copyright. The underlying digitised texts may be in the public domain in some jurisdictions but not in others. For example, a work like The Excavations at Babylon may be free of copyright in Canada but still under protection in other countries. We make no representation that any work is free of copyright restrictions worldwide. It is your responsibility to verify the legal status of any work before using it beyond personal study. Some works, such as A History of Magic and Experimental Science, Volume 1, may have complex copyright histories depending on publication dates and national laws. We provide information where known, but the final determination rests with you.
Where a work is known to be in the public domain under applicable law, we provide it for free access. If you believe any material infringes your copyright, please contact us with sufficient detail for evaluation. We will respond promptly to legitimate concerns.
User Responsibility
You are solely responsible for your use of the Site and any content you access. We are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your reliance on information presented, including historical accuracy, completeness, or suitability for any purpose. The Site may contain links to third-party websites; we do not endorse or control their content and assume no responsibility for them. When you follow a link to an external source, you leave our environment and enter that third party's terms.
Disclaimer of Warranties
The Site and all content are provided 'as is' and 'as available', without any warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not guarantee uninterrupted access, error-free content, or that the Site is free of harmful components. While we strive to maintain accurate metadata and reliable links, occasional errors or downtime may occur.
Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or data, arising out of or related to your use of the Site, even if advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability for any claim shall not exceed the amount you have paid us, if any, in the preceding twelve months. Because the Site is offered free of charge, this limitation is especially important.
Suspension and Termination
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate access to any user who violates these terms or engages in abusive behaviour, without prior notice. We may also modify or discontinue the Site, or any part of it, at any time without liability. If you wish to avoid termination, please respect these terms and the spirit of our library.
Governing Law
These terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the province of Ontario, Canada, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising from these terms shall be resolved in the courts of that jurisdiction.
Severability
If any provision of these terms is held to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
