If the EPUB has no fixed print pagination, the tool starts with an estimated page count and lets you replace it with the page total shown by your own reader.

How the progress estimate works

The Reading tool gives you a realistic estimate of how long it will take to finish a book. Each title in the catalog has a reading time based on its word count and an average reading speed. The median reading time is 331 minutes, but individual books range from 64 to 1,329 minutes.

You can also see the distribution of books by time category: quick, steady, immersive, and marathon. This helps you choose a book that fits your available time, whether you have an evening or a long weekend.

Quick (under 2 hours)

Fourteen books fall into this category, with reading times under 120 minutes. Ideal for a short reading session or a quick introduction to a topic.

Steady (2-4 hours)

Nineteen books take between 2 and 4 hours to read. These are good for a few evenings of focused reading.

Immersive (4-8 hours)

Thirty-four books require 4 to 8 hours, offering a deeper dive into the subject. Plan a day or two for these.

Planning Your Reading with the Reading Tracker

The Reading Tracker records progress in pages, with a current page, total pages, and a daily page goal. It does not track sections or minutes as progress; the unit is always the page. If the catalog does not have a fixed page count, the initial estimate is calculated as the word count divided by 250 words per page. You can replace that estimate with the total shown by your own reading app or edition.

Setting a Realistic Daily Goal

The default daily goal is 20 pages. That is a reasonable starting point for many readers, but you can adjust it to match your schedule. The tracker estimates the remaining time proportionally: if you have read half the pages, you have half the estimated reading time left. The finish date is calculated as the remaining pages divided by your daily goal, rounded up.

Consider Mohammed — Inside the Classic (id 306). It has 58,545 words, which gives an estimated reading time of 255 minutes. At 250 words per page, the initial page estimate is about 234 pages. If you set a daily goal of 20 pages, you would finish in roughly 12 days. If you prefer a slower pace, a goal of 10 pages would take about 24 days.

Adjusting the Total Page Count

The catalog's page estimate may not match your edition. Many public-domain books have multiple editions with different pagination. The tracker lets you enter the total page count from the edition you are actually reading. This ensures that your progress percentage and remaining time are accurate for your copy.

For example, if you are reading Mohammed — Inside the Classic in an edition with 300 pages, you can update the total to 300. The tracker will then use that number for all calculations, so your progress is measured against the book you hold, not the catalog's estimate.

Progress History and Persistence

The tracker stores your progress history in the browser's localStorage. This means your data stays on your device, and no account is required. You can close the browser and return later to see your current page and goal. The history is not synced across devices, so if you switch computers, you will need to start fresh or manually update the numbers.

This design is simple and private. You do not need to create an account or share any personal information. The tracker is a tool for your own planning, not a social feature.

Using the Tracker with the Catalog

The Reading Tracker is most useful when you have already chosen a book. You can use Book Finder and Compare Books to select a title, then open the tracker to plan your progress. The catalog's estimated reading time gives you a sense of the total commitment, and the tracker breaks it down into daily steps.

For a book like Mohammed — Inside the Classic, the tracker turns a 255-minute read into a manageable series of daily goals. Whether you read 20 pages a day or fewer, the tracker keeps you on pace. It is a practical companion for working through the library's longer works.
